artist's statement The sediment works present the body in a state of slow sedimentary entrapment at the murky interface between river and riverbed. The figures are of adult males, un-referenced to any model or image. They are articulated horizontally and are impossibly poised. Their submerged bodies defy gravity as they lightly contact the ground at points of the flesh, as apposed to their skeletal architecture. Although appearing conscious, signs of self-assurance and self-assertion are removed. They remain unaware of the dilemma of their condition. Their bodies and limbs are articulated by the pressures of the pushing, swirling, curling, bubbling surges of a fluid medium in flux. In other words, they are being carried by the flow of their context and condition, without resistance. Each body may metaphorically be viewed as grains of sand, zoomed up in scale, about to be bedded into a fresh layer of a sedimentary bedrock complex.
